Anyone can read a medical chart. They can see diagnoses, medications, specialists, and appointments. But those things don't tell the whole story. They don't tell you what makes someone laugh. What comforts them when they're scared. What routines help them feel safe. Or the little things that make them who they are. When I created the Legacy Binder, I wanted it to be more than a place to organize information. Yes, it includes medications, emergency contacts, medical history, and care instructions. But my favorite pages aren't the medical ones. They're the pages where I share my guardianship wishes. The pages where I explain what matters most to me for Elijah's future. The pages where I write directly to the people who may one day care for him. And most of all, the letter written to my son. Because if someone ever has to step into my shoes, I don't just want them to know how to care for Elijah. I want them to know who he is. I want them to know his story. I want my voice, my love, and my hopes for his future to live on long after the paperwork is read. The Legacy Bind er was created to preserve more than information. It was created to preserve the person.

The recent conversation surrounding Down syndrome and prenatal diagnoses has reminded me of something: The most important things about my son will never appear on a medical chart. His chart doesn't tell you how excited he gets when he's included. It doesn't tell you about his sense of humor, his determination, or the joy he brings to the people around him. It doesn't tell you who he is. As a special needs mom, that's one of the reasons I created the Legacy Binder. Because our loved ones are more than diagnoses, prognoses, medications, and medical records. They're people with personalities, preferences, stories, memories, and lives worth preserving. There are moments in special needs parenting that catch you completely off guard, in the very best way. Last Thursday, before Summer Fest even started, I received a phone call from 7 Hills Church inviting Elijah to participate. To many people, that might seem like a small gesture. But as a special needs parent, I can't remember a time someone has ever called specifically to make sure Elijah was included. Honestly, I hadn't even considered signing him up. Not because he wouldn't enjoy it, but because after years of navigating special needs parenting, you sometimes stop assuming opportunities like this are meant for your child too. But they are. This week, Elijah was paired with buddies who walked alongside him, encouraged him, and most importantly, treated him like one of the kids. Every day he came home glowing. Instead of crashing from exhaustion, he was on cloud nine. And when I say I've never seen my boy this excited about life, I truly mean it. He rode rides. He ate dye-free Kona Ice every day. He learned about Jesus. He worshipped alongside friends his age. He laughed. He belonged. I was so moved by how intentional and prepared the entire team at 7 Hills was to create an environment that was both safe and exciting for him. It wasn't until I picked him up on the final day that it hit me: some special needs children go their entire lives without getting to experience something like this. That's why inclusion matters. Not because it's nice. Not because it's trendy. Because every child deserves the chance to belong. Watching Elijah's little boy heart so full this week filled my mommy heart more than I can put into words. These are the moments we'll remember forever. A huge thank you to the entire Dream Team.
